Tour Details

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) is in southwestern Uganda. The park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and is situated along the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border next to the Virunga National Park and on the edge of the Albertine Rift. Composed of 321 square kilometres (124 sq mi) of both montane and lowland forest, it is accessible only on foot. BINP is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-designated World Heritage Site.[1][2]

Species diversity is a feature of the park.[3] It provides habitat for 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, and many endangered species. Floristically, the park is among the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 flowering plant species, including 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. The northern (low elevation) sector has many species of Guineo-Congolian flora, including two endangered species, the brown mahogany and Brazzeia longipedicellata. In particular, the area shares in the high levels of endemisms of the Albertine Rift.

The park is a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, and many birds such as hornbills and turacos. It is most notable for the 400 Bwindi gorillas, half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas. 14 habituated mountain gorilla groups are open to tourism in four different sectors of Buhoma, Ruhijja, Rushaga and the Nkuringo in the Districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro respectively all under the management of Uganda Wildlife Authority.(Wikipedia)

What to bring on this tour

You will be on the move a lot, therefore you are advised to pack lightly. Your baggage should be clearly labelled. You are restricted to one soft compact suitcase, sports bag, or backpack, of medium size, as well as a day pack. On this trip you may experience several types of weather. We would advise to pack clothes for warm days and cool evenings. Light, quick-drying, practical clothes are advisable for this trip. While hiking, your clothes are likely to get very muddy and may not recover to their original state – therefore take old clothing for trekking. Hard wearing clothes, no bright colors, or no army camouflage clothing should be worn. Greens, khaki and similar neutral clothes are recommended.

Bwindi National Park is renowned for its impressive mountain gorillas, although it is unpredictable for how long you will track before finding them since it all depends on their movement. However, the time spent to track down these Gorillas is unpredictable, the thrill of spending time and observing these gentle giant gorillas is an awesome and exciting adventure that will leave you with long lasting memories of a truly unique experience. After your day full of adventure, you will head over to your lodge to unwind.

Day 4Golden Monkeys tracking in Mgahinga National Park.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Mgahinga National Park headquarter for pre-tracking briefing and later begin the hike over the volcanic terrain in search for Golden Monkeys in the bamboo forests. Hiking through the forests to sight the golden monkeys is not so strenuous like gorilla trekking because golden monkeys live in lower areas, so tracking will require less time. Mgahinga National Park shares boarders with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo.

The park is also the most scenic as it stands at three volcanoes of Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.

Day 5Travel to Queen Elizabeth, Game Drive

You will have an early breakfast and then travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park entering it through the Ishasha sector. Queen Elizabeth National Park is considered to be one of Uganda’s most varied and most beautiful protected areas. You enjoy a game drive along the way during which you will see Lions, various Antelope species, Elephants, Hyenas, Leopards and Buffaloes.

Day 6Morning chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura

After breakfast, you will drive to Kasenyi plains for another game drive to try finding what you could have missed during the previous game drives. Drive back to the Lodge for lunch and then proceed to Kyambura gorge for briefing and then a chimpanzee walks in the gorge. The forest has a small community of Chimps numbering about 25 chimps which has been habituated for chimp tracking tours. Given the small population, and that the chimps are always traveling through the vast Kyambura forest, they are often difficult to find and one can put the chances of seeing them at less than 50%. The trek however is very rewarding with stunning scenery and sightings of other wildlife such as Hippos and Elephants Spend one hour with the chimps and retire to your lodge for Dinner and overnight.

Day 7Drive back to Kampala/Entebbe International Airport
