Tour Details

The Samburu National Reserve is a game reserve on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river in Kenya. On the other side of the river is the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The park is 165 km² in size and is situated 350 kilometers from Nairobi. It ranges in altitude from 800 to 1230m above sea level.[1] Geographically, it is located in Samburu County.

In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ng’iro flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests. It provides water, without which the game in this arid region could not survive.

The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, made famous in the best-selling book and award-winning movie Born Free. The Elephant Watch Camp, of which Saba Douglas-Hamilton is director, lies within the park.

The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves.

Day 1Nairobi - Sweetwater’s

Relax at the hotel or opt to go for a late evening game drive. Dinner and overnight at the luxury tented camp.

Day 2Sweetwater’s – Samburu

After breakfast, drive further north to Samburu Game Reserve. Ewaso Nyiro River in the Shaba Game Reserve gives live to the flora and fauna found here. Lunch will be served at the lodge. Afternoon game viewing in the reserve filled with the scenic beauty. The reserve is renowned for its unique species of animals that includes the Samburu special five; Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Generuk and the Gravy’s Zebra. Later Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight at the luxury tented camp

Day 3Samburu Game reserve

Before dawn the driver guide will be ready for the early morning search of hunting cats. Later return to lodge for normal breakfast and relax at the swimming pool before the next game drive late afternoon. All meals and overnight will be at the tented camp. The reserve is also home to elephants and large predators such as the lion, leopard, cheetah and Wild dogs’ sightings are common attraction with its striking background view of the Mathew’s Range. Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded.

Day 4Samburu - Lake Nakuru

After an early breakfast check out and depart from Shaba as you drive south through Isiolo, crossing the northernmost foothills of Mount Kenya, until Nanyuki town. Thereafter, head west to Nyahururu Falls, commonly known as the Thomson’s falls. After a brief stopover, drive southward to the next destination, Lake Nakuru a home to thousands of flamingos beautifully lining its shores as they feed on the algae. An afternoon game drive around the lake shore later dinner & overnight will be at the Sarova lion hill lodge.

Day 5Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara

after breakfast at the lodgecheck out and depart the flamingo fringed Lake and proceed southwards and turn right at Maai Mahiu to ascend up over the top of the Mau Escarpment and proceed to Masai Mara. Arrive at the lodge check in and have lunch. After lunch spend some time relaxing in your room or at the pool alter on depart for a late afternoon game drive in search of the big five. As sun starts to edge dip into the horizon you can take your time and view this perfect setting and take photos of the beautiful mara rolling plains and if lucky sport the shy. Dinner & overnight will be at the luxury tented camp.

Day 6Masai Mara

Arise early and after breakfast, we leave for a full day game drive by 0730hrs with our picnic lunch boxes in hand. We will go to visit the various spots in the park including spots where the wildebeest migration takes place, we will be having a picnic lunch in the wild with the animals. At 1700hrs we head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight. The Mara is known as one of the finest wildlife destinations in the world, with an excellent chance of seeing the big five, cheetah, serval, hyena, bat-eared foxes, black-backed and side-striped jackals, hippo, crocodile, baboons, warthog, topi, eland, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, waterbuck, oribi, reed-buck and zebra. The true Kenya’s’ jewel for wildlife viewing.

Day 7Masai Mara – Nairobi

Enjoy a sunrise game drive later return for your late morning breakfast at the lodge/ luxury tented camp and check out, take a drive back to Nairobi with stopover at the view point and arrive in time for lunch at one of the Restaurants. Later in the evening, Optional dinner at Carnivore Restaurant Later at an extra cost, be transferred to the Airport to connect with your international flight back home or at your Hotel in Nairobi.
